PANEL DISCUSSIONS

Science vs. marketing: What's driving pet
food product development?
Pet food is a consumer goods business, largely driven
by consumer needs and demands, and other market
factors. It is also the sole source of nutrition for our
companion animals, so prevailing science about their
nutritional needs is key. Different pet food companies

interpret and apply known science and research to
their product development and marketing in different
ways; that is one important way to achieve a competitive advantage. Yet such differences can sometimes
cause consumer or retailer confusion and tensions
between various functions within a company. This
panel will address different approaches and factors
in balancing pet nutrition science with marketplace
demands to help you consider and understand
possible new ways to achieve the right balance within
your organization for market success. Panel members
include Jeff Alix, global marketing manager with DSM
Nutritional Products; Serge Boutet, agrologist and animal nutrition expert at SB Nutrinnov Consultants; Jeff
Johnston, senior vice president, research, innovation
and product development, for Champion Petfoods;
Brent Mayabb, DVM, chief veterinary officer and vice
president of corporate affairs for Royal Canin; and
Nicolas Nolf, president and founder of Atavik pet food
company.
Alix's career in the pet food
industry spans more than 35
years. After receiving his degree
in chemistry from California State
University, Northridge, he has
gained experience across a wide array of functional
disciplines including ingredient and food science,
flavor chemistry, sales and marketing. Alix was a
research scientist at Nestlé Petcare and technical
support and product development manager at
Bioproducts (acquired by AFB International). During
the last 18 years, he has held positions in sales,
business development and marketing for DSM
Nutritional Products. He is currently responsible for
growing DSM's pet food business by managing
business-to-business and business-to-consumer
worldwide marketing activities related to the pet
industry. For this presentation, Alix represents the
DSM-Evonik joint venture business, Veramaris.
Boutet is a McGill University
graduate with a bachelor's degree
in animal science and completion
of an executive development
course (mini-MBA). He has a
34-year career in animal nutrition, including the last
28 years in the pet food industry. Boutet started
