WEDNESDAY, MAY 1
GENERAL SESSIONS (Grand Ballroom A)

8:30 a.m.-9:15 a.m. Omnichanneling: The
wheres and whys of shoppers' channel
choices for pet food
David Sprinkle, research director
for Packaged Facts, provides a survey data-rich analysis of channel
choice drivers, including new pet

and urban/suburban/rural patterns. For pet owners, spending management leads to strategic retail
behavior including channel choice, or rather choices,
with many shopping across multiple channels and
retailers/etailers for bargains, as well as trading
up for priority products such as pet food. Therefore,
the channels that claim double-digit shares of pet
food retail sales not only span the mass versus
class divide, supercenters/discount stores led by
Walmart, pet specialty chains and grocery stores,
but now include the internet, which accounts for 17
percent of pet product sales, according to Packaged
Facts estimates.
Sprinkle is the publisher and research director
at Packaged Facts, a leading supplier of market
research on the U.S. pet industry. In this context,
he has presented on the pet market at conference
events including Petfood Forum, Global Pet
Expo, PIJAC's Top2Top, Private Label Manufacturers Association Pet Industry Panel, SupplySide
MarketPlace, SupplySide West Animal Nutrition
Summit, PIJAC Canada National Pet Industry Trade
Show and VetHealth Global. Prior to Packaged
Facts, Sprinkle worked for the Marigny Research
Group as an analyst, editor and research coordinator
for consumer product and demographic reports.
He also taught business communications at Tulane
University's Freeman School of Business, where he
earned his MBA.
9:15 a.m.-9:45 a.m. Choosing dog
food: Survey results of dogs owners'
purchasing decisions
Maria R. C. de Godoy, Ph.D.,
assistant professor at the University
of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign,
shares results from an online survey
that aimed to understand the beliefs
and knowledge that pet owners have in terms of
their lifestyle and nutrition, and how those translate
into the nutritional needs and daily care of their pets.
This questionnaire was available in English, French,
Portuguese and Spanish, and results from over 4,100
owners reflected countries that have been important
players in the pet food market. Overall, the survey's
findings depicted similarities and unique attributes of
pet parents and their relationship with their dogs that
may assist pet food companies in creating tailored

solutions to address pet parents' diverse beliefs,
demands and expectations for their pets' nutritional
needs and lifestyle.
R. C. de Godoy is an assistant professor in the
Department of Animal Sciences at the University
of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. R. C. de Godoy's

and wellness and to manage clinical conditions of
pet animals, ingredient evaluation and pet food
technology. R. C. de Godoy earned her master's degree in companion animal nutrition at the University
of Illinois, then joined the University of Kentucky
as a research coordinator for the companion animal
nutrition program. She earned her doctorate and
obtained a certification in college teaching and
learning from the University of Kentucky.
3 p.m.-4 p.m. Pet food, retailer and
e-commerce execs: The new world of
selling pet food
Join executives from top pet food companies and
leading pet retailers to learn how to navigate today's
disruptive, continually morphing world of distributing
and selling pet food. Pet owners have more choices
than ever for finding and purchasing their pet food,
from burgeoning e-commerce options to "click and
mortar" to customization to traditional neighborhood pet
shops, superstores and grocery/mass market outlets.
Distributor consolidation is also playing a role. With this
explosion of market changes and options, how can pet
food brands figure out the best channels and retailing
strategies for their products? Panel members include
Chris Hamilton, president and CEO of Red Collar Pet
Foods; Nathan Marafioti, group director of e-commerce
with Nestlé Purina North America; Jacinthe Moreau,
president of World Pet Association; Brock Weatherup, executive chief strategic innovation and digital experience
