2 p.m.-2:30 p.m. Protein from wood:
Nutritional, economical, safe and
sustainable ingredient for performance
dogs and cats
Ricardo Ekmay, Ph.D., animal
nutrition director with Arbiom,
presents data and analysis from
material handling studies currently
underway, notably on performance
in extrusion conditions, as well as data on the nutritional performance of wood-derived SCP as a protein
source in dog food. The focus of this presentation is
to demonstrate the potential nutritional and technical
benefits of enhanced torula yeast (Candida utilis)
produced from wood as a protein-rich, AAFCO-approved protein ingredient for dog and cat foods. The
presentation will provide an introduction to a novel
protein-rich ingredient produced from wood, including
preliminary research and data from material handling
studies and dog trials in 2019.
Ekmay received his bachelor's degree in animal
science from Cornell University and his master's
and doctorate degrees in poultry science from
the University of Arkansas. He returned to Cornell
for completion of his postdoctoral studies. He is
a member of the Poultry Science Association,
American Society of Animal Science and American
Society for Nutrition where he serves as the industry representative to the Animal Nutrition Research
Interest Group. His expertise has been sought after
for task forces and working groups within Crop Life
International and the International Life Science
Institute. He also devotes his time to community
outreach and the promotion of Science, Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education,
especially in the Hispanic-Latin community.

3 p.m.-3:30 p.m. Ancient grains: What's
old is new again
Gary Davenport, Ph.D., companion
animal technical manager with ADM
Animal Nutrition, focuses on the nutritional and functional characteristics
of select ancient grains and their use
in pet food formulations. The marketing of grain-free
pet food products has led to increased use of alternative
ingredients in pet foods as replacements for traditional
ingredients negatively perceived by consumers.
Unfortunately, there is little published knowledge about
these alternative ingredients and how they are best
used. Research data will be presented on the unique
differences in the nutritional and functional characteristics
of selected ancient grains used in pet food formulations.
Davenport is a graduate of the University of
Kentucky, receiving his bachelor's degree in animal
sciences, master's degree in animal nutrition and doctorate in nutritional biochemistry. He has more than
35 years of animal nutrition experience, with 25
years specifically devoted to companion animal nutrition. His research interests have focused on protein
nutrition, skin and coat health, sporting dog nutrition,
nutrigenomics and successful aging. Davenport is
currently the companion animal technical manager
for Archer Daniels Midland Company. In this role, he
is responsible for providing technical support, nutrition
training, formulation services and new product
introductions for the companion animal industry.
3:30 p.m.-4 p.m. Novel probiotic freezedried products as functional pet treats or
pet food ingredients
J.J. Lin, Ph.D., an adjunct professor at Hood College and chief
scientist with Imagilin Technology,
shares the health benefits of Pediococcus acidilactici NRRL B-50517,
a patented, non-spore forming, plant-based probiotic
for preparation of probiotic freeze-dried products for
functional pet treats or functional pet food ingredients. Probiotics can increase the nutritional value
of foods by helping animals' digestion and immune
systems. Probiotic freeze-dried products can be pet
treats and/or pet food ingredients, and dogs and
cats fed with Pediococcus probiotics showed better
digestive health and immune responses.

With more than 30 years of experience in microbial physiology, microbial genetics and molecular
biology at academic research institutes as well as
at commercial research and development division,
Lin has published more than 50 papers and is
frequently invited to present scientific results in many
international conferences. From years of research and
development, the research group leads Imagilin to
have six issued and seven pending patents related to
compositions and applications of Pediococcus-based
probiotics, including the patent pending about the
integration of probiotics into pet food/treat through
freeze-dried process. Lin earned a bachelor's degree in
plant pathology from the National Taiwan University,
a doctorate in molecular virology from the University
of California and postdoctoral work in microbiology
and genetics at Cornell University.

MARKET/PACKAGING (Room 2505)

1 p.m.-1:30 p.m. Pet food on Amazon and
beyond: A playbook for e-commerce success
Mike Black, vice president of
global marketing, Profitero, shares
data and insights into what pet
brands are doing to win online,
key implications for manufacturers
and the steps they can take to maximize the relentless growth of e-commerce. U.S. pet food sales
are expected to soar to $30 billion in 2019. With
e-commerce accounting for roughly $1 of every
$10 spent, and only set to accelerate, it's more
important than ever for pet brands to develop, and
continuously enhance, their e-commerce playbook.
Black's marketing background spans leadership
positions in both product marketing and demand generation at multiple global analytics companies. Prior to
Profitero, he was vice president of product marketing at
Nielsen, where he was responsible for launching new
analytic products for the company's retail measurement
business. Black also served previously as global head
of marketing for Nielsen's Innovation Practice and vice
president of Affinnova, a predictive analytics company
that was acquired by Nielsen in 2014. His career started at Staples, where he held roles in both marketing
and corporate public relations. Black is a graduate
of Boston College and has a bachelor's degree and
master's degree in English literature.
