Hays is the executive director of the Association
of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). She
assists AAFCO committees working on issues including Pet Food Label Modernization, Independent
Conclusions of GRAS and the Ingredient Definitions
Committee. Hays' background includes organizing
and managing a firm that contracts to provide
management services for associations, employment
as the executive director for a state research and
development commission, and positions in purchasing and logistics management for two international
manufacturers. Hays is a graduate of the Indiana
University Center for Philanthropy Fundraising
School and of two programs for entrepreneurs,
including one with an international business focus.
She has a degree in secondary education and
French from the University of Wyoming.
1:30 p.m.-2 p.m. Evaluation of black
soldier fly larvae as a protein and fat
source in pet foods
Ryan Yamka, Ph.D., founder of
Luna Science and Nutrition, presents data on the impact of black
soldier fly larvae (BSFL) meal and
oil on acceptability, stool quality
and digestibility in pet foods. BSFL are rich in protein, lauric acid and linoleic acid. As a result, they
have a high potential for used in animal foods.
To date, BSFL (whole and defatted-ground) have
been approved by the FDA for use in salmonids and
poultry. Yamka's presentation will focus on the use
of BSFL meal (defatted-ground) and BSFL oil as
protein and fat source for companion animals.
Yamka earned bachelor's degrees in animal science
and biology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and
State University, followed by a master's degree and
doctorate in animal science from the University of
Kentucky and an MBA from Baker University. He
has worked for Hill's Pet Nutrition, Hartz Mountain
Corp. and Blue. He founded Luna Science and
Nutrition; co-founded Guardian Pet Food Company;
currently serves as an advisory board member for

Jennifer Adolphe, Ph.D., graduated with her doctorate in companion animal nutrition from
the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan. She has a master's
degree in human nutrition and is a registered dietitian. Adolphe is the recipient of over 20 awards
and scholarships for her academic work and has numerous peer-reviewed publications. Her work in
the pet food industry has focused on product development, ingredient procurement and nutrition
education for consumers. She is currently the nutrition manager at Petcurean Pet Nutrition, a
Canadian company committed to offering superior quality pet foods.
Greg Aldrich, Ph.D., is a research associate professor and coordinator for the pet food program
at Kansas State University, is president of Pet Food Ingredients & Technology and is an independent nutritionist specializing in foods, ingredients and nutrition for companion animals. He writes a
monthly column for Petfood Industry on ingredients. Aldrich earned his doctorate in nutrition from
the University of Illinois, a master's degree from the University of Missouri and bachelor's degree
from Kansas State. He has held management and technical positions with Co-op Feeds, the Iams
Co., Kemin Industries Inc. and Menu Foods Ltd. He is a member of the American Society of Animal
Science, American Society for Nutrition and American Academy of Veterinary Nutrition.
Serge Boutet is an agrologist and animal nutrition expert at SB Nutrinnov Consultants. He has
a 34-year career in animal nutrition, including the last 28 years in the pet food industry. Boutet
started his consulting company in 2013, after serving as manager of pet foods and nutrition for
J.E. Mondou Ltee (the largest pet product retail chain in Quebec, Canada) for more than eight
years, plus 13 years as the technical services manager for Rolf C. Hagen Inc. and Hagen Pet Foods
Inc. He also had previous roles with Ralston Purina Canada (Chow Division) and Hill's Pet Nutrition.
Boutet is a McGill University graduate with a bachelor's degree in animal science and completion of
an executive development course (mini-MBA).
Kadri Koppel is an assistant professor in the Department of Food Nutrition Dietetics and Health
at Kansas State University. She teaches sensory analysis classes, including a unique class called Pet
Food Sensory Analysis. Her research focuses on pet food palatability and involves both analytical
and consumer studies. She has been published in a variation of food and animal science journals.
Koppel is also an associate editor in Journal of Sensory Studies as well as the chair of an ISO
sensory analysis group.
Anna Kate Shoveller, Ph.D., is an associate professor in the Department of Animal Biosciences, University of Guelph. She teaches companion animal and equine nutrition and runs an active
comparative nutrition research group. Shoveller's laboratory focuses on optimizing nutrition across
mammalian species for health and longevity without compromising the future of our food chain.
She has published over 60 peer-reviewed papers, contributed to multiple book chapters, applied
for multiple patents and gained over $1.5 million within 3 years of her appointment. Shoveller is
an active member of the Companion Animal section of the American Society of Animal Science and
a board member of the Canadian Society of Animal Science. She received her doctorate in nutrition
and metabolism at the University of Alberta in 2004.
