important growth driver
Jared Koerten, head of pet care at
Euromonitor International, examines premiumization as a global
megatrend, exploring the drivers,
motivations and sociodemographic
shifts behind it. Premiumization
has been the growth engine for dollar sales in

9:45 a.m.-10:15 a.m. Pet food lawsuits:
Recent trends and the future of labeling
litigation
Michael Annis, a partner with
Husch Blackwell, offers guidance
on litigation risks if claims of
false advertising arise and how to
best protect against claims being
initiated in the first instance. During the last few
years, there has been a steady proliferation of lawsuits challenging marketing and labeling practices
of pet food products, with the majority relating to
usage of trigger terms like natural, wholesome or
healthy. Amid heightened consumer activism and
growing interest from the plaintiff's bar, pet food
labeling presents significant risks that have not
been adequately explored. Annis will also address
industry vulnerabilities and offer a look ahead to
future labeling issues.
Annis is a St. Louis-based attorney protecting the
corporate value of food and agribusiness clients,
including claims of false advertising, intellectual
property infringement and enforcement and the
misappropriation of trade secrets. A 25-plus year
veteran, Annis has litigated numerous cases
in federal and state courts, as well as before
federal administrative agencies. He is a frequent
speaker, both in public forums and in private client
presentations, on many topics within the intellectual
property world, including false advertising.
