STUDENT PROGRAM
PAPER ABSTRACTS
TUESDAY, APRIL 30
ORAL PRESENTATIONS
10:20-10:35 a.m. Evaluation of the efficacy of medium chain
fatty acids (MCFA) against Salmonella Typhimurium (ATCC
14028) in dry pet food kibbles
Janak Dhakal will present this study, which used
medium chain fatty acids (MCFA, caproic, caprylic
and capric acids) as an additive to coat dog food
kibbles. The results from this study showed that
MCFAs can mitigate post-processing Salmonella
re-contamination in dry dog food kibbles.
Dhakal received his Ph.D. in poultry science from
Mississippi State University (2013-2016). His
expertise and work areas are food safety and
microbiology. During his Ph.D., he explored the effect antimicrobial stresses have
on Salmonella and its biofilm forming ability and thermal tolerance. He joined the
Feed Microbiology and Toxicology lab in the Grain Science Department at Kansas
State University as a post-doc in 2017. Here, he and Greg Aldrich, Ph.D., work
together to find various approaches and strategies to control Salmonella, E. coli
and fungus contaminations in pet foods.
10:35-10:50 a.m. Americana pet parents: How their beliefs and
lifestyle impact their pets' daily care
Juliana Paschoalin de Souza Nogueira will share results from an online survey regarding American pet
parents' beliefs about their nutrition and lifestyle,
and how those translate into their food choices for
their pets. Those results are also correlated with
their area of living, number of people residing in
the household, level of education, gender, age and
income. The United States has the largest pet food
market in the world and the largest population of
dogs (which exceeds the number of children). Thus, findings of this internet-based
survey should be of interest to a large audience.

education at the University of Illinois and joined Godoy's lab as a graduate research
assistant. Her research investigates the impact of prebiotics and fibers on the gastrointestinal health of adult dogs. In the future, Souza Nogueira wants to enter the pet
food industry and apply her knowledge in nutrition and clinical nutrition.
10:50-11:05 a.m. Motivations, concerns and practices of feeding
plant-based (vegan) diets to dogs and cats
Sarah Dodd, DVM, will report on the prevalence
of meat avoidance (vegetarian, vegan) and how
it may be higher in pet owners than in the general
public. About 25 percent of vegan pet owners elect
to feed a plant-based diet to their pet and of those
who do not, most have an interest in doing so yet
do not due to concerns regarding the suitability of
the diet, the lack of research regarding these types
of diets and fear of veterinary disapproval. Concern
for the welfare of farmed animals was the most widely reported concern regarding
conventional diets and interest in feeding plant-based diets was common,
regardless of owner diet.
After graduation from the veterinary program at Massey University, Dodd
completed an internship in clinical nutrition and a master's degree at the Ontario
Veterinary College, University of Guelph, Canada. Now, Dodd is a resident of the
European College of Veterinary and Comparative Nutrition and is engaged in a
Ph.D. research program at the same institution. Dodd's research focuses on plantbased nutrition in companion dogs and cats, and she has presented the results of
her research at veterinary specialty conferences in the United States and Europe.

POSTER PRESENTATIONS

Souza Nogueira grew up in a small town on the country side of São Paulo, Brazil.
From a young age, she demonstrated a huge passion for animals and health. This
pushed her towards earning a bachelor's degree in veterinary medicine at the University of São Paulo, Brazil. In her second year of veterinary school, she became
interested in the nutrition and clinical nutrition of dogs and cats. She then became
an intern at the Dogs and Cats Nutrology Service at the Veterinary Hospital, a
position she held for the remainder of her undergraduate program.

11:10-11:20 a.m. Thiamine: Dietary importance, challenges in
pet foods and advancements in fortification
Amanda N. Dainton will focus on the importance of
thiamine, a vitamin especially vital to cats that may
be destroyed in the process of producing "canned"
foods. A complete and balanced diet may contain ingredients with the capability to break down thiamine
and further destruction can occur during lengthy
high temperature cooking in a retort. The complex
digestive and absorption environment in cats and
the challenges innate to formulation and processing
need to be considered when assessing thiamine stability innovations.

In her senior year, she received a fellowship to study abroad due to excellent academic performance, which brought her to the laboratory of Assistant Professor Maria
Cattai de Godoy, Ph.D., in August 2016. Souza Nogueira decided to continue her

Dainton is currently a first-year Ph.D. student at Kansas State University under the
supervision of Greg Aldrich, Ph.D. Her previous education includes a master's degree
in nutritional science from the University of Illinois and a bachelor's degree in feed
