Jennifer Adolphe graduated with her PhD in companion
animal nutrition from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine
at the University of Saskatchewan. She has a master of science
degree in human nutrition and is a registered dietitian. Adolphe is
the recipient of over 20 awards and scholarships for her academic
work and has numerous peer-reviewed publications, along with
extensive speaking experience. She has received her Competent Communicator
certificate from Toastmasters International.
Greg Aldrich, PhD, research associate professor and
coordinator for the pet food program at Kansas State University, is
also president of Pet Food Ingredients & Technology and an independent nutritionist specializing in foods, ingredients and nutrition
for companion animals. He writes a monthly column for Petfood
Industry magazine on ingredients. Aldrich earned his doctorate in
nutrition from the University of Illinois, a Master of Science from the University of
Missouri and Bachelor of Science from Kansas State. He has held management and
technical positions with Co-op Feeds, the Iams Co., Kemin Industries Inc. and Menu
Foods Ltd. He is a member of the American Society of Animal Science, American
Society for Nutrition and American Academy of Veterinary Nutrition.
Serge Boutet is founder and president of SB Nutrinnov
Consultants, based in Quebec, Canada. Boutet is an agronomist
expert in animal nutrition and a McGill University graduate, with
a bachelor's in animal science and completion of an executive
development course (mini-MBA). Through his 31-year career in
animal nutrition, including the last 25 years in the pet food industry, his expertise in nutrition covers pet food and feed formulation, knowledge of
ingredients, product development, technical training and lecturing, quality control,
export, sales, retail, operations and supply chain management, warehousing,

the Institute of Veterinary, Animal and Biomedical
Sciences at Massey University. Her research interests include health benefits of diets for companion
animals and the effects of nutrition on intestinal
health for companion animals.

gut-brain axis: select
probiotic strains to enhance
companion animal wellbeing - Bart Dunsford, PhD,
business development manager for
Lallemand Animal Nutrition. Considerable evidence
shows that various probiotic strains impart differing
results in animals, including broad, positive impacts
on companion animal well-being. Knowledge of
the relationship between immunity and probiotics
is continuing to grow; single or multi-strains of

transportation and logistics strategies. Boutet started his consulting company in
2013, after serving as manager of pet foods and nutrition for J.E. Mondou Ltee
(the largest pet product retail chain in Quebec, Canada) for more than eight years,
plus 13 years as the technical services manager for Rolf C. Hagen Inc. and Hagen
Pet Foods Inc. He also had previous roles with Ralston Purina Canada (Chow
Division) and Hill's Pet Nutrition.
Micah Kohles earned his DVM from Kansas State University
and a master's degree in public administration from the University
of Nebraska-Omaha. In addition to his role at Oxbow Animal
health, his professional responsibilities include his practice at the
Nebraska Animal Medical Center in Lincoln, Nebraska, and serving
on the board of directors at the Lincoln Children's Zoo. He is an
adjunct assistant professor at the University of Nebraska College of Veterinary
Medicine and has worked with multiple zoological institutions. Kohles is an active
member in many professional associations and was a member of the American
Veterinary Medical Association's inaugural Future Leaders Program, was named as
one of 25 up-and-coming veterinarians by Veterinary Practice News in 2013 and to
Pet Age's Forty under 40.
Kadri Koppel, PhD, is assistant professor in Kansas State University's Department of Human Nutrition. She joined the university
in 2012 after previously working in industry in her native Estonia
as a microbiologist, laboratory manager, quality control manager
and sensory analysis projects manager. At Kansas State, she
teaches sensory analysis classes, including a unique class called
Pet Food Sensory Analysis. Her research focuses include pet food palatability involving both analytical and consumer studies. Koppel earned a Bachelor of Science,
Master of Science and doctorate in chemistry and materials technology from Tallinn
University of Technology in Estonia.

probiotics can have an impact on gene expression,
and the benefits can vary depending on the life
stage. Similarly, various strains have positive effects
for gastrointestinal well-being in several pathways.
Now, Dunsford highlights recent research focusing
on the gut-brain axis and the positive effects of
specific probiotics on stress and anxiety.
Dunsford obtained a Bachelor of Science in animal
science at Kansas State University, Master of
Science in nutrition and doctorate in veterinary
anatomy at Texas A&M University. His graduate
work focused on the effect of various nutrients
in the development of the gastrointestinal tract.
Dunsford was an assistant professor in the animal
science department at Virginia Tech and has spent
more than 25 years in industry positions, with
his main focus on probiotics and prebiotics since

2005. Previously, he worked for ADM, Farmland
Industries, AFB International, Dad's Pet Care, GTC
Nutrition and Penford Foods. Dunsford has over
50 publications in scientific and trade journals and
more than 30 invited presentations.

foods: new models -
Meredith Burke, scientist with
Kemin Nutrisurance. Pet foods
and treats continue trending
toward all-natural, minimally processed, fewer/no
preservatives and functional ingredients, making
natural preservatives an attractive alternative to
synthetic ones. However, they require rigorous
evaluation to establish their efficacy in pet foods.
