Opening keynote (Grand Ballroom A)
8:30-9:30 am Jack Hanna, popular host of the Emmy-Award-winning
television series "Jack Hanna's Into the Wild," kicks off the conference
portion of Petfood Forum 2018 along with some of his animal friends. He
shares his special window into the animal world and details his globetrotting
experiences and timeless tales. The presentation also includes a mix of video

television personality and author. His most recent TV series, "Jack Hanna's
Into the Wild" and "Jack Hanna's Wild Countdown," have won numerous
awards and reach nearly 2.5 million households each week. Since 1983,

GENERAL SESSION
(GRAND BALLROOM A)

9:30-10:15 am My pets
eat better than me: pet
specialty data and trends
show why - Natasha Davis,
client service manager for GfK.
The number of US households
with cats or dogs is steadily on the rise as younger
generations opt for pet parenting in place of
child-rearing. As these generations gain influence,
their demands for healthier, more transparent and
ethically sourced pet foods are becoming more
apparent. Davis highlights humanistic trends driving
premiumization in the US pet specialty channel
and how some new, and not-so-new, categories
are transforming as a result. She also identifies the
winning play for 2018 and beyond.
In her role with GfK's Pet Specialty Sales Tracking,
Davis consults with leading manufacturers to
help solve business challenges through the use
of big data. She is adept at finding trends in
GfK's unmatched purchase database representing
about 11,000 pet stores (and more than 30,000
veterinarian clinics) nationwide, revealing emerging
opportunities at the product, category and regional
levels. Davis holds a degree in applied mathematics
from William Paterson University of New Jersey.

NUTRITION SESSIONS
(ROOM 2502)

1:00-1:30 pm Kibble diameter and its effect on canine
palatability - Kristopher Figge,
senior technical sales and service
with AFB International. New palatability studies sought to evaluate
and understand the potential effect that dog food
kibble size and diameter might have in dogs of
different sizes and breeds. Disproving the initial
hypothesis that all dogs would prefer smaller kibble
- and dispelling myths that small dogs especially
favor small kibble - the data showed that all three
sizes of dogs preferred the larger kibble. Figge
presents additional analytical data to show why.
Figge has been with AFB International for more
than 17 years, working with customers to improve
the palatability of their dog and cat diets. He holds
a master of business administration degree and
has presented at numerous Petfood Forum events,
the Brazil Animal Nutrition Congress and Argentina
Animal Nutrition Congress.
1:30-2:00 pm Effect of vitamin supplementation on longevity and health of
Beagles - Michael Coelho, PhD, global technical
product manager for BASF Corp. Pet food industry

vitamin supplementation continues
to increase, especially with vitamins related to health and disease
prevention. This stems partially
from the influence of human food
trends but also because vitamin
retention through extrusion continues to decline
due to higher conditioner retention time and temperature. A recently released cohort study of 2,000
privately owned Beagles over 15 years evaluated
the effect of vitamin supplementation on their
longevity and health. Longevity linearly increased,
while annual veterinary visits linearly decreased.
Coelho has a doctorate in animal nutrition and has
been in the industry for 33 years, working in and
publishing vitamin research since 1985. He is the
author of several publications on vitamins such
as BASF books Vitamin E in Animal Nutrition and
Management, Vitamins: One of the Most Important
Discoveries of the Century and, published in 2017,
Vitamins in Animal Nutrition and Premixing. He has
also presented 125 papers at nutrition conferences. Previously, Coelho served as a professor
at the American Feed Industry Association's Feed
Ingredient Institute and ran the BASF quality school
for customers for 20 years.
2:00-2:30 pm Gut microbiota: are cats small dogs?
- Emma Bermingham, PhD,
senior scientist with AgResearch.
Diet alters the intestinal microbiota
of our pets, but understanding
the implications of these changes has proven
challenging, with the current dogma being to
translate observations from humans onto our pets.
Bermingham shares results of a study investigating the impacts of diet on the composition and
function of the intestinal microbiome of pets, and
understanding these differences in relation to their
specific nutritional requirements, particularly the
distinct differences between cats and dogs.
Bermingham obtained a bachelor of applied science
honors degree in animal science from Massey
University in New Zealand and a doctorate from
Massey (based at AgResearch). She undertook
several post-doctoral positions including CSIRO
(Australia), INRA (France) and the Waltham Centre
for Pet Nutrition (UK). She returned to AgResearch
to investigate the effects of diet on intestinal
health parameters and was appointed senior
scientist, responsible for conducting commercial
and applied nutritional research for companion
animals. Currently, Bermingham is also an honorary
research associate in companion animal nutrition for
